West Kowloon Cultural District is buzzing. It seems that every month since its launch, there’s a new exciting and enticing concept to visit, making it the latest destination for gourmands and art enthusiasts. Opening late last year, FAM 囍公館 is one of the most popular venues in the area, decked with stylish interiors and an extensive menu. It’s recently launched its takeaway picnic concept for diners to sit out in the grass, and spend the experience outdoors. We made a trip to West Kowloon Cultural District’s FAM 囍公館 to try the dim sum picnic set.

Location
It may seem like a bit of a trek to get to West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), but if you take the MTR to Kowloon Station, it’s only a 15-minute walk away from the exit. Alternatively, there’s the minibus option, or you can take a taxi/car directly to the location. WKCD is Hong Kong’s largest arts and cultural project to date, comprising 40 hectares on the wedge-shaped reclaimed waterfront land, west of Yau Ma Tei. There’s plenty to see and do here, and the location will only expand in cultural activities—including art and space museums, to name a few.

FAM 囍公館 is nestled on Museum Drive, Art Park of West Kowloon Cultural District. Perched directly on the waterfront, the contemporary Chinese restaurant offers 180-degree views of Victoria Harbour, and is fronted with a lush grass lawn. Spanning 6,000 square feet, FAM 囍公館 features indoor and outdoor dining and is decked in playful art deco.

FAM 囍公館 Picnic Set for Two
If you’re planning to dine at the restaurant, it’s definitely worth booking a table in advance to avoid queues, especially on weekends. But if you’ve come to try the latest Picnic Set (HK$498), come anytime (ideally after 5pm when the sun isn’t blazing hot). The set includes roll-out mats or beach chairs, for you to indulge in the signature food items, whilst taking in the stunning sunset from the grassy grounds. Find a spot with your convenient ready-to-use dining equipment, and sit away from the crowds for a peaceful experience. We had the picnic set on the edge of the grass area, and we brought our dog—WKCD is, after all, a very dog-friendly place.

After settling in with the mat and chair placement, we took out the picnic set items. The takeaway menu includes a generous assortment of dim sum, made fresh from the restaurant. Included in the Picnic Set are:
Shrimp dumpling & wild chicken stuffed with pork dumpling & caviar from Royal Caviar Club (2 pcs each)
Roasted pork bun with buttered charcoal crust top (2 pcs)
Baked turnip cake (2 pcs)
Fried mixed wild rice with seafood and eggs (1 portion)
Soft Drinks or Juice or Heroes Beer (2 cans)

The roasted pork bun with buttered charcoal crust was my favourite—a splendid variation of the original “cha siu bao”, using the same rich barbecue sauce, wrapped in a soft, doughy charcoal-infused bun. The shrimp dumplings were also a standout, topped with indulgent caviar to uplift the experience even more. I haven’t yet tried the FAM 囍公館 dinner menu, but there is a definite emphasis on contemporary Cantonese cuisine, lending a unique twist on classic dishes.
Helmed by Executive Chef Ronald Shao, the dim sum dishes were exquisite and easy to snack on for a picnic. The restaurant’s occasion-friendly appeal adds to its winning location.

Overall
It’s so rare to find a decent picnic spot in Hong Kong—and to find a place that supplies all the picnic equipment (mats, chairs, mini tables) is even rarer. FAM 囍公館 offers quality dining and convenience, making the whole experience fuss-free. With its wide harbour-facing panoramas, the grass area makes a relaxing respite from the city hustle nearby. The restaurant aims to serve as a dining and cultural lifestyle hub for creatives, connecting contemporary Chinese cuisine with art and music.

Head here for date night, or with friends and family—and bring your pooch too, if you have one. It’s worth spending the day at WKCD too if you can, but be sure to book things in advance. Weekends are extremely busy, and at the peak of summer, very hot, so prepare everything prior to the trip to avoid overheating or not finding a table. Trust FAM 囍公館 to keep you in good hands.
