HONG KONG
The historic neighbourhood of Ap Lei Chau is home to some of Hong Kong's most iconic feats, including Jumbo restaurant, the floating fishing village and Hung Shing Temple. We check into Urbanwood Hotels, a new development devoted to uncovering the district's charm for newcomers and nostalgic locals.
The 50-room property features four types of accommodations for hotel guests or long-term stays. Each room is small and intimate, while its floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the city and allow light to stream in from all angles. Our Deluxe Room with Harbour View was equipped with a mini-fridge, drip coffee and tea bags, water, a lounge chair and eco-friendly bathroom amenities. It's important to note that the rooms are indeed very compact but its modern design and friendly service make up for it. Pets are welcome so we were greeted with a cat and dog bed with treats for both.
The reading room is a sleek space ideal for working in comfort. There's also a shared kitchen often used by long-stay guests.
Urbanwood Hotels emphasises its love for Ap Lei Chau and showcasing the best of what it has to offer. We experienced a sampan trip around the fishing village as part of our experience which included a tour guide, a fresh boat noodle lunch and a browse around a traditional boathouse.
The hotel's onsite restaurant BONZA! is an Aussie-style café serving all-day brunches and its signature waffles. We loved the s'mores waffle, a must for a post-excursion sweet treat.
