1. What are some of the most exciting marine species or ecosystems that guests can explore during their stay at JOALI Maldives?
The water around JOALI Maldives is known for its resident population of manta rays and hawksbill turtles shark. Guests may have the chance to spot these fascinating creatures while snorkeling or diving.
2. How do JOALI Marine conservation efforts contribute to the broader environmental goals of the Maldives ?
JOALI is committed to sustainable practices and marine conservation efforts. By implementing various initiatives – such as coral reef restoration, marine life protection, and reducing plastic waste – we aim to protect marine life, including sea turtles and manta rays, and help preserve the rich biodiversity of the Maldives' marine ecosystem.
3. Can you elaborate on the specific conservation programmes guests can engage with, and how they can directly impact the marine environment ?
At JOALI Maldives, we proudly run the JOALI Reef Restoration Program (JRRP), where we support the natural recovery of the surrounding reefs through our “fragments of hope” – tiny corals planted in our own nurseries. Once these corals reach a suitable size, they are out planted onto our existing house reef to aid its regeneration. Guests can actively participate in our coral reef restoration efforts by helping transplant coral fragments and assisting with nursery maintenance. This involvement not only enhances our conservation efforts but also allows them to connect with the vibrant marine ecosystem.
4. What are the main challenges of preserving marine biodiversity in the Maldives, and how does JOALI mitigate those challenges?
Preserving marine biodiversity in the Maldives faces several key challenges, including coral bleaching due to rising sea temperatures, which threatens the health of reefs. Unsustainable fishing practices lead to overfishing, depleting fish populations and disrupting the ecosystem. Pollution, particularly from plastic waste, harms marine life and degrades habitats, while coastal development can result in habitat destruction and increased sedimentation. Additionally, climate change poses long-term risks to marine ecosystems through sea level rise and changing ocean conditions.
In response to these challenges, JOALI Maldives implements various initiatives. The JOALI Reef Restoration Program (JRRP) actively cultivates and outplants coral fragments to rejuvenate damaged reefs. The resort also adopts sustainable practices, reducing plastic usage and promoting responsible fishing. Engaging guests and local communities in educational programs about marine conservation further enhances awareness and involvement. JOALI Maldives collaborates with marine biologists to monitor reef health and conduct research, ensuring informed conservation efforts. By fostering community involvement in these initiatives, JOALI Maldives cultivates a collective effort to protect marine ecosystems. Through these strategies, the resort aims to safeguard the rich marine biodiversity of the Maldives while promoting sustainable tourism.
5. How do you educate guests about sustainable interactions with the reef and marine life during their stay?
We conduct weekly Marine Lab presentations where guests can actively participate and learn about the JOALI Reef Restoration Project and the importance of marine conservation. Additionally, we offer guided tours of our coral nursery, led by a marine biologist, giving guests a deeper understanding of sustainable interactions with the reef and marine life.
6. Have any notable success stories in JOALI’s marine conservation efforts left a lasting impact?
Yes, JOALI has several notable success stories in its marine conservation efforts that have left a lasting impact. JRRP has been marking significant strides in restoration the reef ecosystem through the innovative use of coral nurseries and Mineral Accretion Technology (MAT). Over the past three years, the project has successfully planted a total 5,621 coral fragments, contributing to the regeneration of the marine environment. The efforts of the JRRP have not gone unnoticed, as they were recently honored with the Hidden Gems Award at the WIT travel changemakers 2023. This prestigious award recognises the impactful work of the Joali Reef Restoration Program in utilizing advanced techniques to enhance coral growth and restore the health of coral reef.
Additionally, our collaborations with local communities and schools have fostered marine education initiatives, inspiring younger generations to engage in conservation efforts and develop a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
