Staycation at National Hotel’s 99 Bonham

Boutique hotels in Hong Kong offer some of the most refined services and impressive interiors—and 99 Bonham is no exception. Located conveniently between Sheung Wan and Central—a peaceful hub only minutes away from the bustle—99 Bonham is a rare find, founded by Hong Kong-based group National Hotels. We checked in to experience an evening staycation at the quaint boutique.

Location

Perched between two trendy districts—the old-school Sheung Wan and trendy Central—99 Bonham is easily reachable by public transport and from the airport. The area is dotted with old Hong Kong remnants from traditional medicinal shops to Chinese bakeries, yet also features many up-and-coming Western eateries and coffee shops for breakfast in the morning.

Design

The aesthetic is minimalist modern, designed by Italian architectural and design firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners, who has previously worked on other international projects including the Bulgari Hotels in London, Milan and Bali, and the new Ermenegildo Zegna Group corporate headquarters in Milan, to name a few.

The Room

There are 84 rooms in the building, each very spacious and boasting spectacular views of the city. One of the highlights was definitely the massive desk space at the corner of the room, ideal for business travellers and creatives. With a 270-degree view of the district, guests can watch the sunrise from all angles for an experience unique—and rare—in Hong Kong, which is typically small and cramped, particularly in the city centre. The bathroom is sleek, with walk-in rain showers and a bathtub (not all rooms).

The Amenities

Minimalism is at the heart of 99 Bonham, and guests are usually here for a function. The hotel is very space-efficient, with the cabinet opening up to a mini kitchen, which includes a coffee machine, sink, and cutlery in case of nights ordering in. There is a gym downstairs, and the hotel works with numerous restaurants and cafés in the district to encourage guests to eat locally and try some of the area’s best eateries—it is Sheung Wan, after all.

Overall

Our experience at 99 Bonham was welcoming and pleasant—from the courteous staff to the easy-to-use facilities. The hotel is small, but the rooms are generous, much larger than some other boutiques we have found. What was most memorable, however, was the glorious views, admirable during sunset and sunrise for a picturesque evening of bliss.
