What's the buzz? Nestled within the luxurious confines of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, The Aubrey, a Maximal Concepts establishment, tantalises taste buds with its rendition of Japanese izakaya cuisine.
Who flocks here? A sophisticated clientele – think a fusion of young creatives mingling with seasoned business folks.
What's the design like? Imagine a Georgian mansion transformed into distinct spaces – a kitchen, drawing room, lounge, and dining area – each exuding its unique vibe. Adorned with portraits of the muse, British illustrator Aubrey Beardsley, the interiors boast antiques and draw inspiration from Japanism, a 19th-century art movement. And let's not forget the captivating views overlooking the Victoria Harbour.
How's the food? Drawing inspiration from Ginza's izakaya cuisine but adding a modern Western twist, the new menu boasts delights like spicy fried cauliflower, agadashi tofu, and the enticing asparagus avocado roll. Noteworthy mains include the BBQ tonkatsu beef rib and Wagyu curry udon. Cap off your meal with a decadent dessert – an indulgent chocolate cake with almond mousse accompanied by cherry yuzu sorbet.
Sips and spirits: Not just a haven for food enthusiasts, The Aubrey is a go-to spot for connoisseurs of fine drinks. Their award-winning cocktails are a huge attraction. Housing three distinct bar experiences – a drawing room and a curio lounge – this spot boasts Hotel Beverage Manager Devender Sehgal and a team of expert bartenders ready to craft personalized drinks for guests. Consider the Torii (HK$160), a potent blend of vermouth rosso, Campari, amontillado sherry, and sweet potato shochu, or perhaps the Mori (HK$180), an enticing fusion of pear, honey, citrus, ancho, mezcal, and awamori, offering a delightful blend of smokiness and sweetness.
What's the dress code? Smart casual.
Noteworthy awards/recognitions: The Aubrey is the highest-ranked Japanese bar in Hong Kong at No. 17 on 2023 Asia’s 50 best bars list
