REVIEW:
W Singapore sits cosily within the upscale residential neighbourhood of Sentosa Cove, within lush tropical surroundings blending with the sea and marina, docked with yachts, catamarans and – even bigger flexing boats.
The sea-facing Sentosa Cove hotspot is best distinguished by its 24-hour illuminating outdoor swimming pool that often plays host to the chain's signature pool parties which have proven to be a popular DJ-clad event at many of its properties.
The Suite:
Whether you're travelling for business or pleasure, W Singapore guarantees the latter, no matter the reason for your trip. That pleasure can be best found in its 240 vibrant, plush accommodations scattered across the hotel. We stayed in the one-bedroom Marvelous Suite, replete in bold décor and a colourful palette of purples, beiges and hot pinks. You'd book this suite for parties, celebrations and romantic getaways, but the hotel also boasts a family-friendly feeling and cribs are available upon request.
The 861-square-foot abode comes with a separate, spacious living room fitted with a working desk and chair, two bathrooms (one en-suite, one guest bathroom), a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a gorgeous marble bathroom with his and her sinks and W Hotel amenities, a standalone bathtub that peers over the pool and a shower. But the highlight of this made-for-entertaining suite is its wraparound balcony that leads you between rooms and around a 180-degree view of the world below. There's a lounging sofa on one side and a table and chairs at the pool-facing part. In true W fashion, the space also features a hanging egg chair that you'll never want to leave, especially when it's time for that afternoon nap.
Dining & Drinking:
W Singapore has a limited selection of F&B choices, but there's still something for everyone. Its SKIRT restaurant (pictured above) is a decadent affair, with sky-high ceilings and incredible sculptures that tower from above to swoon over while dining. During our experience, we had the Grazing Menu which includes three starters, a main with two sides, and dessert which rounds up to SG$196 for two persons, a really good deal considering the amount of food you get with it. Touted for serving some of the best steak on the island, the grill house doesn't disappoint, though we've definitely had better and the meats could've been seasoned more generously. The starters were the highlight, with the rich bone marrow giving that melt-in-your-mouth flavour and paired perfectly with crisp grilled sourdough and sweetened with a touch of pear compote. Foie gras was a hit too, and we relished this with the refreshing beetroot salad to offset the richness of the terrine.
The other three dining concepts include the kitchen table for international delights, WOOBAR, a glamorous cocktail joint and the Wet Bar for poolside bites and drinks.
Breakfast is never to be overlooked and unfortunately during our trip, we were disheartened by the property's buffet which didn't keep its food hot. That being said, guests can also make the most of its made-to-order breakkie options which include Singaporean signatures like chilli crab omelette and crab cake eggs benedict, and western classics including a healthy avocado toast which come straight from the kitchen served piping hot.
Facilities:
The enormous, swanky pool takes the crowning glory at this hotel. It's also said to be the biggest in the Lion City, and if you book the Marvelous Suite you'll have uninterrupted full-frontal views of this aqua blue beauty. Did we mention that there's an adult pool bar, in the pool? Guests can also swim, anytime you want – the pool is open 24 hours a day party people or general night owls.
Meanwhile, the AWAY Spa offers everything you need for a relaxing moment, from its immersive treatments to its sauna, steam room, vitality pool and experiential showers. The gym is also well equipped, and will keep you on your fitness track.
The Verdict:
W Singapore – Sentosa Island is a modern, lively hotel that also offers the tranquility and peace when needed. The rooms and suites are well equipped and tastefully decorated, and though the property itself isn't massive, it isn't trying to be. W isn't a boutique hotel but it certainly gives off the vibe occasionally with its casual service and cool – and unpretentious – crowds that it attracts.
